Grand opening of Artesian Springs, Phase II, Millcreek, June 14, 2017

MILLCREEK.  Riddle me this: Our population is expected to double in the next 40-50 years. Our air quality is increasingly deteriorating. How can we handle that growth, mitigate the challenges to our health, and remain one of the valley’s most attractive and desirable places to live?

Millcreek’s answer? Construct higher density housing and mixed use development near our transit infrastructure. This would maintain ease of access to mass transit and encourage fewer trips by our residents.

To meet these goals, Millcreek’s leaders are interested in redeveloping the Meadowbrook area along Millcreek’s section of the TRAX Blue line (west of State St. between 3900 S. and Big Cottonwood Creek). The City Council recently completed an economic development tour of that neighborhood to assess its possibilities.

The City Council also participated in the grand opening of Phase II of the new Artesian Springs apartments at 4200 S. Main St. Click here for a good news article about that event. This project is a promising mix of affordable and market rate housing that brings together people from all walks of life, all within a short walk of the TRAX station.

Here is a glimpse of how our western “frontier” can evolve to become Millcreek’s answer to the riddle posed above. Through these types of projects, we can accommodate growth and address air quality, and at the same time create exciting and walkable communities.

Our Meadowbrook asset can become yet another Millcreek neighborhood that its residents love and never want to leave.
